Norway Chess, known for its unique "trademark" Armageddon format for tiebreaking, has seen some intriguing twists and turns as we approach Round 7. In this format, players compete for an extra 0.5 points. With White having 10 minutes on the clock to Black's 7 minutes, but Black having the draw odds, the stakes are high and the tension palpable.
The Game Intelligence (GI) and Game Point Loss (GPL) scores of the players take into account this asymmetry, providing a nuanced perspective of the players' performance. While the GI score combines human performance with the engine evaluations, the GPL is purely based on the engine's evaluations. Note that these scores are different from the more commonly known average centipawn loss, which is mainly used for engine development and does not take into account the particularities of the Armageddon system.
As of now, GM Fabiano Caruana leads the pack with a GI score of 0.47 and a very low average GPL of 0.03, though he only played 1 Armageddon game.
Following closely behind is GM Alireza Firouzja, with a GI score of 0.23 and an average GPL of 0.14. Remarkably, Alireza's precision in the Armageddon games, as indicated by his engine evaluation, surpasses that of his performances in the classical games!
GM Magnus Carlsen, leading the field with the most Armageddon points thanks to 5 wins, holds the third spot in the GI rankings. He has a GI score of 0.02 and a GPL of 0.50.
As Round 7 draws closer, it will be fascinating to see how these scores evolve in both the Classical and the Armageddon segment of Norway Chess 2023. Stay tuned for more updates as the tournament progresses!
